The interlaced square and compasses depicted at the center of this ornament is considered "the symbol" of Freemasonry. The square symbolizes morality, virtue, and righteousness, while the compasses stand for spirituality. The letter "G" in the center came into use in the 1800s, and it represents God or Supreme Being or Geometry. The open book represents the bible or holy book, and along with the columns they represent the two columns of King Solomon's Temple. The acacia leaves symbolize the faith in the immortality of man. Finally, the All-seeing Eye is a symbol of the watchfulness of the Supreme Being, "…whom the Sun, Moon, and Stars obey and under whose watchful eye even comets perform…" This three-dimensional 24-karat gold-finished brass ornament represents George Washington's association with the fraternal organization of Freemasonry for much of his life.
