The annual National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will start the holiday season on Thursday, December 3, at 5:00 pm on the Ellipse of the White House. Marking the start of month-long festivities known as the Pageant of Peace.
The tree lighting ceremony, first started in 1923 under President Calvin Coolidge, and the year 1954 marked the beginning of the Pageant of Peace, which theme was intended to echo the words of the angels ("Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men").
Most of the goods and services which made the event possible were donated: like designing the site, providing the tree, the transportation to get the tree to D.C., supplying the Christmas lights and power, nativity scene, the peace symbols, plaques and trees for the "Pathway of Peace" ...etc.
The seasonal displays will feature the Christmas Pathway of Peace, the National Christmas Tree and 56 smaller ones from each US state, territory and DC; Model trains that surround the base of the National tree, the National Christmas Tree Railroad; and Santa's Workshop. The trees will be lit each evening at dusk until 11:00 pm. The workshop will open at select times to allow children to visit with Santa.
You will find extraordinary gifts, hand blown glass, and educational patriotic toys your whole family will enjoy. Hurry supplies are limited. Sale ends December 13.
