The Capitol Christmas tree featured in the ornament hearkens back to the first Christmas tree to be displayed on the Capitol grounds. In 1913, 20,000 spectators assembled on the the Capitol's East Front to witness the lighting of the first tree.
The holiday ornament derives its design from the interior decoration of the Capitol building. The delicate snowflakes are taken from geometric patterns featured in the Minton tile floor. The intertwined red ribbon and green laurel are reminiscent of the mosaic tile floors on the second floor of the Small Senate Rotunda installed in 1902 by the Vulcanite Tile and Mosaic company. The stand of the ornament is inspired by the carving on the original Senate Chamber chairs, designed by New York cabinet-maker Thomas Constantine in 1819.
The official 2019 ornament is composed of multiple layers of gold-plated brass with colorful accents. It has a red ribbon to tie onto a Christmas tree and a flat base to allow it to stand upright onto any surface. Own a moment of history. Order your holiday ornament today.
