1991 West Front of Mount Vernon with the Powel Coach Ornament
The sight of a coach pulling up to the front door of the Mansion at Mount Vernon was a familiar one in the late 18th century. Hundreds of guests arrived at the west front of the Mansion each year, eager to experience the famous hospitality of their hosts, George and Martha Washington. Shown in front of the Mansion and framed by the archways in the colonnades is the Powel Coach. Today, the Powel Coach is displayed in the stable at Mount Vernon. Because it is a superb example of an 18th century American coach, the Powel Coach was the inspiration for this three-dimensional 24-karat gold-finished brass ornament.
